Ultram is a non narcotic pain reliever prescribed for mild and moderate pain.Ultram has minimal side effects when compared to morphine.
Ultram (Tramadol hydrochloride is a synthetic compound that works in the central nervous system (CNS to relieve pain) by increasing the viability of neurotransmitters norepina phrine and serotonin.Ultram (Tramadol) binds to opioids receptors and reduces the uptake of two important neurohormones, serotonin and norepinephrine, into nerves. The pain relief is not instant but takes about 30 minutes to get effective and maximum effect is felt after two to three hours after taking the medicine.

Side Effects of Ultram

Ultram can cause abdominal pain, appetite loss, rash and urinary difficulties .Ultram can cause dizziness, tiredness, blurred vision, nausea and constipation. Ultram can cause visual disturbances and symptoms of menopause. Ultram can also cause sweating and itching of the skin, hallucinations, suicidal tendencies urinary retention.
Ultram can cause headaches, upset stomach dry mouth and diarrhea. Ultram can cause nervousness anxiety, agitation; euphoria.Ultram also causes emotional instability and sleepless nights. Ultram can cause low blood pressure.

Precaution in taking Ultram

Do not take Ultram if you are allergic to it.
Do not take Ultram if you have consumed alcohol or any narcotics.
If a person is taking any sort of tranquilizers, sedatives or nervous system depressants they should consult a doctor about their dose of Ultram.
If one is under the influence of alcohol and happens to take a large dose of Ultram the person may experience difficulty in breathing specially when combined with alcohol.
A person who has an abdominal condition or a head injury should avoid taking Ultram before the diagnoses as it may interfere in obtaining accurate result of injury.
Some patients have had seizures if they have taken large doses of Ultram either orally or intravenously.
If a person is addicted to narcotics and is taking Ultram the person may experience withdrawal symptoms.
Precautions and proper medical advice should be taken for patients having liver and kidney disease. A tab must be kept on the amount of Ultram dose the patient should take. A person who has taken Ultram may feel drowsy and should not undertake any activity which needs concentration.
Special precautions to be taken if a woman is pregnant or breast feeding a child,
Tramadol is toxic to animal's fetus and passes into the fetal circulation in humans.
Ultram passes into breast milk so mothers should stop breast feeling whilst they are taking Ultram. Ultram can lead to physical and or psychological addiction. If you plan to under go surgery or a dental procedure tell your doctor that you are taking Tramadol.
Ultram causes one to feel dizzy and light headed when one rises quickly from a sitting or reclining position, this is know as postural hypotension.
Do not take Ultram with herbs or other supplements such as, hops kava, passion flower and valerian, these can increase sedative effects. Do not use ginseng or St.Johns Wort.

Ultram Drug Interactions:

If Ultram is taken with Carbamazepine its effect is reduced.
Combining digoxin with Ultram may cause digoxin toxicity
Ultram may cause severe reaction if combined with tramadol and monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAO) antidepressants, flu oxetine fluvoxamine and sertraline.Ultram dosage may increase the risk of seizures. SSRIS may cause severe reactions and should be used with caution.
Drugs such as phenothiazines increase blood levels and thus the effects of tramadol.
Quinidine may slow the break down of Tramadol. The full impact of this interaction is not known.
Tramadol may increase the effects of warfarin and digoxin.
Combining tramadol with drugs such as tricyclic antidepressants, fluoxetine, and fluvoxamine and sertraline may increase the risk of seizures. Ultram dosage may increase the risk of seizures also.
Adult and child over the age of 16 years should take 25-100 mgs every 12 hours.
Patients having a severe kidney problem should not consume more than 100mg per day.
Seniors should not take more than 300 mg a day.
Ultram is not recommended for a child under16 years.

Ultram Overdose

Ultram overdose can be deadly.
Symptoms include breathlessness and Ultram overdose can also cause seizure.
